#Repost @thejoejoiner ・・・ MOONLIGHTER BRIEF: @alistairramage year 3 Quadratic Music 🎧 I set a brief at @bachelseagraphics for the second year running, pushing the students to work on projects outside of their specialisms to broaden conceptual thinking and increase skill variety. Alistair selected the “make a piece of sound” outcome at random and used mathematical equations as rules to control expressions of sound, for audio and visual to work in harmony within a gridded format. The Tuesday talk this week is by Catherine Ince from the V&A. Catherine’s talk is entitled ‘Something About Curating’. The talk starts at 5pm on Tuesday 18th in the lecture theatre. All are welcome. — Catherine Ince Catherine Ince is Chief Curator of V&A East, a new museum and collection research centre planned as part of a new cultural and education district for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London and due to open in 2023. Before joining the Victoria and Albert Museum Catherine was a Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery where she organised major survey exhibitions and publications including ‘The World of Charles and Ray Eames’ (2015), ‘Bauhaus: Art as Life’ (2012), and ‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion’ (2011); and oversaw presentations of the international touring exhibitions ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier’ (2014) and ‘Pop Art Design’ (2013) In 2012 she commissioned Japanese architect Junya Ishigami to create the installation ‘Architecture as Air’, the first major installation by an architect for the Curve Art commissions programme in the Barbican’s Curve Gallery. Previously, Catherine was Curator and subsequently Co-Director of the British Council’s Architecture, Design and Fashion Department where she organised touring exhibitions, installations, events and collaborative projects about contemporary architecture and design around the world. During this time she was responsible for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture and worked with guest curators Sir Peter Cook, Jeremy Till and Ellis Woodman between 2004 and 2008 to represent British practice on an international stage. She studied art and design history before completing a Masters in curatorial studies. Catherine is currently an international juror for the Swiss Design Awards, and is a member of the advisory board for the Stanley Picker Gallery and Dorich House Museum at Kingston University. She regularly contributes to books, journals and online media about twentieth century and contemporary visual and material culture, and has lectured widely in the UK and internationally. #gdctuesdaytalks @catherineince75

Elizabeth Friedlander (Elizabeth ND typeface at bauertypes.com) Elizabeth Friedlander (1903-1984) was born in Berlin. She was a Jewish Anglo-German type designer, calligrapher and graphic designer. She studied design, calligraphy and typography with E.R. Weiss at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and worked as a graphic designer for the elegant magazine, ‘Die Dame’ being in charge of headings and lay-outs. She was commissioned to design a typeface for Bauersche Giesserei from Frankfurt am Main, a very unusual task for a woman in those days. Elizabeth was produced in the Bauersche Giesserei in 1938. Because of the war, in 1939 she moved to London taking finally British citizenship. After the war, she succeeded as a book and graphic designer, among others for Penguin Books, Linotype and Monotype.

Brian Aldiss on Kubrick ‘I was always keen on the idea of narrative. My books always have a narrative. That is to say, cause and effect. That's what I like. But Stanley was less interested in that and he said to me 'now forget about the narrative'. He said 'what you need to make a movie is six 'non-submersible units'. That was the phrase he used: 'non-submersible units'. Kubrick more explicitly defined a non-submersible unit as "a fundamental story sequence where all the non-essential elements have been stripped away." To take one example, 2001: A Space Odyssey: 1. The monolith visits humankind in its infancy. 2. An early man discovers technology (Moon Watcher smashes the bones) 3. The monolith is excavated on the moon by astronauts and sends a message. 4. Humankind send a manned mission to Jupiter to investigate. 5. Advanced technology (Hal) endangers the mission crew. 6. Technology is defeated and the surviving crewmember rendezvous with the aliens. 7. The Star-Child is born. #kubrick #stanleykubrick #storytelling

In storytelling we know there’s the 3 Act (Aristotle - beginning/middle/end) and 5 Act system (Elizabethan - includes rising action, things going wrong then resolution) and lots of extensions to these models over the years. In 1991 playwright Ken Adams came up with a simple system for telling stories which everyone from Pixar to Brands have been using called the story spine exercise. (Btw is not just ads and films it’s a way to create presentations as well..) #storytelling
