YCN Awards Success!

The YCN Student Awards shine a light on new creative talent, and centre on a collection of live creative briefs.

This year Chelsea has three winners: Daniel Cooper for i newspaper, Cornelia Temple-Richards for Triumph and Sophia Ray for Triumph.

My resolution is to create a photo book exploring a kitsch pop surrealist approach to the ridiculousness of habits, behaviour and social interaction within the middle and upper middle class during isolation. No model, makeup artist, stylist or photographer is on set. My models are, and will be, modelling at home then placed into custom digital environments and couture pieces by myself. #Repost @graddipgraphicdesign 👀 ・・・ This term, we were due to have an exhibition of the work from our @741.6092 project. The 4 week project looked at our Library catalogue. Moving beyond the usual discussions around diversity of authors, we wanted to look at the actual designers represented in the collection. We collectively gathered the missing data and produced the following visual responses.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Today's installment is from Cheng Meng, Jiahuan Zhu and Yi-Ling Hsiao were particularly shocked by the difference in the number of designers by place of birth. 71% of the collection is made up of European designers. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "In the 741.66092 project, we collected the history, development, region, gender, and age of the designers. Among them, we were particularly shocked by the numbers of designers on all continents, but particularly the number of European designers. Our outcome shows the designers in the collection by continent of birth. We took the histogram as inspiration to combine the numbers with a map presented as 3D. This is a call-out to anyone in the UK who has any spare acetate In their studio, workshop, office or home that they would be happy to donate or sell to the Visor Army, the national network of dexterous, DIY-savvy volunteers who are making protective face shields for use in the NHS to defend frontline health workers from coronavirus. . As the Covid-19 crisis has escalated, demand for acetate has soared and supplies are now scarce. The Visor Army has secured funds to make hundreds of thousands of face shields, but is running out of acetate. It is looking for A4 or A3 sheets of acetate that are at least 240 microns thick to make urgently needed face shields to NHS specifications. If you have any spare sheets of acetate that you would be willing to donate to the Visor Army - or to sell for 10p a sheet - please message me or @clarriewallis to arrange collection. Growing up from the age of thirteen I relaxed my hair, preoccupied with trying to adhere to western ideals of beauty. My hair is a part of me, of my history, of my ancestors, it is defiant and will no longer conform. A new project in the making @the.afro.muse a series of self portraits celebrating the beauty of the Afro both political and personal.

Hi all! So next week is the start of a new term and we are calling it transition week. Yes there will be briefs and creative challenges but we also need to see how we will all be communicating with each other by practicing the tools we will be using. It’s a new way of working for us all so let’s see how it goes and welcome back!

#Repost @chelseaual ・・・ This week’s drawing challenge is to create a ‘self-isolation’ poster- BA Graphic design communication students Samantha Leung and Katie Beddoe have been overcoming the challenge of working together in isolation and invite you to collaborate in this open project. “We usually work together but because we are apart, we have resulted to using an online way of visually communicating how we feel. Specifically making it topical to the current climate. We had a need to create and work together, so we made a downloadable pack with items that have turned into the essentials of surviving self-isolation. Using these items, we wanted people to #createfromhome and make their own ‘self isolation’ poster. Hi @bachelseagraphics right now we are all in the same situation, we are all mostly stuck indoors, some are sick, waiting for news, some are stuck and others are travelling back home rapidly and we all are worried about what’s going to happen next. This is to be expected Had a good conversation with a few third years this morning initially about D&AD which turned into the possibilities of how we can collaborate and make creative projects that positively respond to the needs of those around us. I know it’s stressful at the moment but we will find creative ways to turn this experience around given a little time to absorb all these changes. Please stay connected with each other, plan tea breaks together online, or have lunch together on screen, find ways to support each other and maybe even cook up some creative ideas together.
