Joe Joiner – it’s Nice That

Graphic designers have a tough time of it – practising an art based on simplicity means it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. Executed poorly there’s often outcry (think Wolff Olins’ 2012 identity) but done well it goes largely ignored (think almost all other identities created in the last few years). One designer very much getting it right, but thankfully not being ignored, is Joe Joiner, a young London freelancer who’s built himself an impressive portfolio of work over the last few years. With stints at Nike and THIS IS Studio under his belt, as well as projects for Adidas and Microsoft, we’re confident we’ll be seeing a lot more great work from Joe in the future.

An ornamental alphabet

In the past typographers required knowledge of printing processes including type founding and printing and by the early twentieth century the definition of typographer was restricted to that of designer of the printed page as distinct from the compositor or machine operator. Today the ‘typographer’ has become a vague term, which does not account for the inherent differences that technology has brought to the discipline. Typography is no longer a vocation but an emergent profession that is difficult to define. Contemporary font design frequently combines classical, bespoke skills rendered on screen.

Stage one Graphic Design Communication students have been developing a new ornamental display font with highly Individual characters inspired by drawing digitally and laser cut manufactured to the exacting standards reminiscent of a traditional font foundry.
Level tutor Nigel Bents and Associate Lecturer Paul Oakley will further support students by printing typographic posters at the New North Press.
