Yes, today 5 groups with 2 stage 3 Graphic Design Communication students per group will undertake a challenge to produce ITunes artwork for Gabby’s new track – they will also be presenting moving image responses.

MUMEDI Results

You may recall that last term stage 3 students from Graphic Design Communication Chelsea were shortlisted for MUMEDI (the Mexican Museum of Design supported by the Adobe) international poster competition ‘Death with a smile’. This had submissions from international designers, both professional and students (ours).

The results are in and for the first week of the accompanying exhibition a public vote was taken which has been won by Chelsea student Joshua Stocker – Congratulations!

New international branding for CCW

The combined colleges Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon, University of the Arts London have a new brand identity designed and developed by stage three Graphic Design Communication student Jack Haslehurst. The commission came from the Head of Colleges and the CCW international committee and will be launched shortly in Tokyo. Jack, the final year student rep was shortlisted and successful in pitching his concept and its application in the Chelsea boardroom and received an Apple i-pad as a reward for his endeavors.

It’s Nice That – Ray O’Meara

To mark the upcoming launch of It’s Nice That No.8 – which you can pre-order NOW – we ventured into the Bloomsbury studio of designer Ray O’Meara, the responsible for the new look of It’s Nice That magazine. In this interview we find out a little about his process, the art of a great cover image and – perhaps excitingly – what’s in store for No.8…

…Ray a graduate of Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea also works as an associate lecturer with our current student on the programme.

Hovis, Levis, Lynx and Adidas on screen

Ringan Ledwidge widely acknowledge as one the UK’s top commercial directors presented a stimulating lecture on Tuesday 31 January 2012 as part of our popular professional speaker programme at BA Graphic Design Communication – Chelsea.

Ringan screened a showreel of work in commercials and short film that illustrated his rise to success which kick-started in 1999 when he was selected as part of the Dream Team by Creative Review and won Best Young Director at Cannes Lions.

He went on to receive numerous awards at D&AD and BTAA for his hugely popular commercials for Lynx, Adidas, Nike the COI and Coca-Cola. In July 2005, production began on his first feature length film Gone, produced through Working Title and Universal, which was the released in 2007.

On returning to the world of commercials. Ringan joined forces with director Daniel Kienman and Rattling Stick was born. Here Ringan has directed award-winning campaigns for Vodafone, Orange, Levis, Britvic, Hovis and Virgin media.

Ringan has been named Best director by Campaign Magazine for two years in a row while Rattling Sticks has been named Best Production Company of the Year for two years in a row. He also managed to pick up Gold at Cannes Lions and the BTAAs. Ringan has been named Best Director by Campaign Magazine for two years in a row while Rattling Stick has been named Best Production Company of the Year at the BTAA awards for the past three years. In November 2009,

Ringan was rated tied second in the Gunn Report’s most awarded directors in the world.

Max Hattler with stage 2 students

During last term, the award winning animator Max Hattler came to work with the gdc stage 2. Working in small groups the students responded to his brief to make short sequences following general instructions for their structure which, when joined together became a new, group generated animation. Below is an example of his work entitled ’1925 AKA Hell’ followed by the stage 2 film ‘Shape Rainbow’.

Strictly ‘fashion confidential’- our students are currently catwalk crazy developing exciting concepts to promote the arrival of Spring Studios in Manhattan next year. Spring Studios are a luxurious blend of image-makers, photographers, stylists, promoters and brand strategists who represent couture and high-end labels. We’re collaborating with Chelsea graduate and Spring Creative Director Andreas Neophytou, so we would highly recommend that you fashionistas our there watch this space!
