Ringan Ledwidge widely acknowledge as one the UK’s top commercial directors presented a stimulating lecture on Tuesday 31 January 2012 as part of our popular professional speaker programme at BA Graphic Design Communication – Chelsea.

Ringan screened a showreel of work in commercials and short film that illustrated his rise to success which kick-started in 1999 when he was selected as part of the Dream Team by Creative Review and won Best Young Director at Cannes Lions.

He went on to receive numerous awards at D&AD and BTAA for his hugely popular commercials for Lynx, Adidas, Nike the COI and Coca-Cola. In July 2005, production began on his first feature length film Gone, produced through Working Title and Universal, which was the released in 2007.

On returning to the world of commercials. Ringan joined forces with director Daniel Kienman and Rattling Stick was born. Here Ringan has directed award-winning campaigns for Vodafone, Orange, Levis, Britvic, Hovis and Virgin media.

Ringan has been named Best director by Campaign Magazine for two years in a row while Rattling Sticks has been named Best Production Company of the Year for two years in a row. He also managed to pick up Gold at Cannes Lions and the BTAAs. Ringan has been named Best Director by Campaign Magazine for two years in a row while Rattling Stick has been named Best Production Company of the Year at the BTAA awards for the past three years. In November 2009,

Ringan was rated tied second in the Gunn Report’s most awarded directors in the world.

Max Hattler with stage 2 students

During last term, the award winning animator Max Hattler came to work with the gdc stage 2. Working in small groups the students responded to his brief to make short sequences following general instructions for their structure which, when joined together became a new, group generated animation. Below is an example of his work entitled ’1925 AKA Hell’ followed by the stage 2 film ‘Shape Rainbow’.

Spring Studios are a luxurious blend of image-makers, photographers, stylists, promoters and brand strategists who represent couture and high-end labels. Bookbinding Master Class

We ensure that all our students encounter a wide range of digital and also analogue activities and we were delighted to welcome back two of our most recent graduates Sara Williams and Joey Rowen to work alongside our new stage two students in a bookbinding master class. Both Joey and Sara have utlised bespoke book production within their professional work and had a great time trying their hand at teaching passing on skills to new designers.

Christian Jeffrey has the unique opportunity to combine his two great loves by working with leading sportswear and lifestyle brand Puma on a prestigious internship at their new HQ in Herzgenaurach Germany. Puma executives recently met Graphic Design Communication stage 3 students in London and Christian became the successful signing and will be working on design and promotions for the next World cup tournament. Our students were invited to apply and recommended by Craig Tompkinson a highly successful GDComm graduate, himself a designer with Puma.

Last week of term at Chelsea

On friday stage 1 GDC students had a chance to show off their talents at an event in Chelsea’s Casket studios which was also attended by the Dean and all the technicians who have been helping with this years projects so far. Here is a sample from the Dingbats brief, where students are asked to recreate a typeface in wood, then lose it in an interesting way. (Jake Hollands below)

Thursday at The Peckham Multiplex Cinema GDC saw students from stage 2 screening their movies made for the Consume Peckham project working with businesses from Peckham to make film biographies. The Cinema was packed out and the films were well received. At the after party the students recent work with motion graphics designer and artist Max Hatler was shown.

Also on thursday, Stage 3 students gathered for a final celebration before setting off to write their dissertations over the winter break.

Consume Peckham proudly presents its third edition, co-ordinated by Kieron Dennis. This year sixteen short films have been made by Stage 2 Graphic Design Communication students from Chelsea. Subjects include an evangelical church, a dog grooming salon, and a Christmas decoration company.

Together they reflect the diversity of commercial activity in Peckham. The documentaries also reveal the resilience of a community tested by recent riots and budget cuts and shows how Peckham supports, inspires and provides chances for its young residents. Consume Peckham presents a truly authentic portrait of the varied and occasionally bizarre cultural mix that is to be found in South London’s most infamous postcode.

FUN AND CHEEKY

Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea have been invited to work exclusively with Comic Relief and Sports Relief. Six stage three students were invited for apply for three placement opportunities…and all six were all successful! Tom Brushwood, Daniel Cooper, Jack Haslehurst, Sophie Heath, Christian Jeffery and Emma Noble will be developing creative strategies to enhance this famous charity.

Red Nose Day has become something of a national institution since its launch in 1988. In 2011, more than £102 million was raised to transform lives. It just goes to show what a difference a Red Nose Day can make.

Bill Gosbee, Head of Creative Services of Comic Relief, adds: ‘Comic Relief’s greatest asset is its sense of humour and fun, cheeky tone of voice. We had a great meeting with the Chelsea student team and all the portfolios were pretty remarkable’.

NICE AND USED

Following his recent and inspiration lecture at Chelsea, Graphic Design Communication graduate Alex Geoffrey has received a great response to the launch of the second edition of his publication Used magazine. It’s Nice That is all about championing great creativity by publishing exciting practitioners both on their website and magazine. Used is currently featured and has received this excellent review.

‘Oversized magazines are a bit of a favourite here in the studio. We love getting our hands on a weighty publication and it’s always a pleasure to thumb through pages made of a thicker stock. Used magazine is no exception. Contained within its massive pages are some particularly engaging editorial pieces that focus on the fine line between fashion and art, plus a wealth of full-bleed fashion photography. The standout piece in this issue explores the stunningly intricate work of Nicola Samori, discussing the darkness of the painter’s work and his relationship with the Old Masters’.
