Typographic Mini Golf

Stage one students recently completed a three-dimensional typographic project realised through group work designing and manufacturing an 18-hole mini-golf course. This exercise combined the pleasure of sport with the rigour of typography. Helped and supported by our workshop technicians, students made both holes and putters for a mini golf open day on April 26th on the parade ground at Chelsea Millbank. Within the golfing range, classical Baskerville rubbed shoulders with the likes of Zapf Dingbats as the sun shone down on the green.

SAS awards 2013

SAS – Creative talent, corporate and brand communications for a digital world, Student Scholarship award in collaboration with Chelsea College of Art and Design

SAS London recently launched a £10,000 scholarship programme at Chelsea College of Art and Design to recognise creative excellence and nurture emerging talent. The scholarship programme will ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the design industry.

This is the second year that SAS have funded a Student Award Scholarship and for 2013 the challenging brief was based on the theme of ‘Supermarket Futures’ and was specific to the second year students of Chelsea College of Art and Design on the BA Graphic Design Communication course. The requirement was to create an innovative concept and to present it to a judging panel and wider audience, as a digital pitch. All 45 students on the course undertook the brief and students were shortlisted to present in the final on 22 April.

Finalists presented to the SAS judging team comprising of David Stocks – Executive Creative Director and Matthew Shannon – Design Director and representatives of Chelsea College of Art and Design, Geoff Thomas Shaw – Undergraduate Design Programme Director, and Kieron Dennis – Project Leader,

Geoff Thomas-Shaw commented: ‘This award will enable students to acquire greater confidence in focusing on their studies within the latter stage of the BA programme. SAS are unique in terms of their generosity and in supporting the next generation of graphic design and communication talent, whilst ensuring they acquire an essential skills set based upon professional practice and critical engagement’.

David Stocks commented: ‘This partnership enables us as a business to support the development and future of the design industry and to help students solve problems and respond to a brief, in a creative way. The results and outcomes varied from each individual student but the process was an exciting one and the winners deserve the SAS Scholarship for their third year of study’.

A first prize of £5,000 was awarded to Jack Hardiker, a second prize was awarded to Sally Lewis and a £3,000 third prize to £2,000.

Clash & Collide

Talenthouse ‘the home of all artists and creators’….have recently commissioned three talented stage 3 Graphic Design Communication Students to work with adidas on the launch of Crash and Collide, a new award to seek out diversity within art, design and fashion protagonists working together in breaking creativite boundaries. Our students created abstract graphic murals that were overlayed with urban marks from grafitti artists and work was luanched in the adidas flagship store in London.

Well its that time of year when the fair weather golfers out there, dust of their kit and start heading out to the greens. It seemed the right time then for the 1st students of BA Graphic Design to hit the Wood Workshop to make another 9 holes ( I think it might actually of been 11 ) to go with the 9 they made last year. Its proved a great success again with a great deal of energy and a real buzz about the place for a week. Below are some photos taken during their time with us and we are all looking forward to playing the holes at an event straight after Easter. Follow the link to see last years group as well. David Russell came back to inspire us, the Ideo way..

On tuesday we welcomed back graduate David Russell to give our guest lecture. Since graduating in 2011 he moved on to the design consultancy Ideo - famous inventors of the laptop, and innovators of ‘design thinking’. David led us through the inspirational Ideo approach to tackling design problems and his journey through the ranks so far. He also gave us some genuine insights into not only the Ideo approach but how we can all apply this to our own practices, thanks David!

Also present was a graduate from 2012 – Jack Haslehurst, who just recently also joined Ideo.

The Rattling Stick and Chelsea story continues

After a lecture from acclaimed Rattling Stick Director Ringan Ledwidge at Chelsea, student Josh Carpenter was inspired to join the company to follow his love of film and now he’s recommended the talents of graduate Emma Noble (image below) who is now one of the stars of the new Bulmers advert ‘Reverse’ by Rattling Sticks Sara Dunlop.

Rattling Stick ranks third in the Gunn Report’s most-awarded production company in the world for 2012.
Emma Noble and Sophie Heath have also been working on the new Red Nose Day 2013 campaign now underway..

A new HOME for Manchester from Bhav Mistry & Joel Baker

Recent graduates Bhav Mistry and Joel Baker worked on the design elements of the rebrand of ‘Home’ – the merger of the Cornerhouse and the Library Theatre Company coming to Manchester in 2015. The new identity is based on screwed-in letters, which can be removed to create different iterations of the identity. The organisation will produce, host and support a multi-disciplinary arts programme, learning and participation, performance and digital innovation. O Street and Creative Concern initially undertook research with audiences and stakeholders through workshops, and developed the ‘brand personality’ for Home around the concept ‘The Play of Ideas’, according to O Street.

Gentletude international typography awards

…big news just in for Graphic Design Communication and Chelsea. The Gentletude Design Award is an international award for typhographic design students, both undergraduate and graduates within 4 years of graduation), who study or studied in England, Italy, Switzerland, USA, Singapore, Argentina, or Japan. In November we submitted 18 entries and achieved 10 finalists of 14. We now have the results from the jury in Italy and ours students have been awarded first, second and third prizes!

The Award is organised by the NGO Gentletude, a not-for-profit organisation founded by Cristina Milani. The award aims is to encourage a new generation of designers to be creative at an international level and to encourage a broader community of practice.

Our students implemented the the alphabet to create a message elaborating the term ‘gentletude’ and including the words ‘Kindness’ and ‘Attitude’. A key criteria required messages to be shared by smartphone, so it was important to consider technological constraints when creating work. The idea was that the recipient of the message will reflect on kindness as an option for a better life.

First prize is 1,000 Euro and second 500 Euro. There will now be extensive home and international press coverage. The first prize winner is Joe Hayes.

The Gentletude Design Award 2012

The Gentletude Design Award is an international award for typographic design students which aims is to encourage a new generation of designers to be creative and consider the importance of language as narrative and the appropriate use of fonts. Using letterforms to create a message, students were asked to elaborate a message including the term ‘Gentletude’ inspired by the words ‘Kindness’ and ‘Attitude’. Designs were required to be shared via smart phones, hence the importance of considering technical constraints when creating work. Ideally the recipient of the message would reflect on ‘kindness as an option for a better life’.

Stage three graphic design students have entered a bumper crop of ambitious responses to this award, results of which will be announced late in December.
